AT&T is the latest entrant into the $68 billion mobile credit card processing industry. The company has announced a partnership with wireless credit card payment company Apriva to support credit and debit card transactions for all of the carrier’s smartphones.
Credit card payments would be accepted through two new applications, AprivaPay and AprivaPay Professional, which would turn smartphones into point-of-sale devices that accept credit and debit card transactions, AT&T claims.
The service starts at $14.95 a month per phone line, in addition to applicable monthly voice and data costs, according to AT&T’s website. The AprivaPay Professional plan would cost $19.95 a month.
The mobile payments industry is projected to grow by more than 50 percent a year for the next five years, reaching more than $600 billion worldwide by 2014, according to Generator Research, an independent market research firm.
