Big changes are coming to your debit and credit cards this month. For the most part, these changes are aimed to protect consumers from unreasonable fees.


Penalty fees are now capped at $25, while late fees cannot exceed the minimum payment amount. Banks can no longer charge inactivity fees and are required to re-evaluate interest rate increases every six months.

Credit Card Interest Rates Continue to Rise

At a time when interest rates are dropping across the board, credit card rates are hitting new highs.


The research firm Synovate says the average rate on existing credit cards is nearly 15 percent, up from 13 percent in 2009 and it is at its highest level since 2001. By comparison, the rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage is 4.52 percent, down from 5.52 percent a year ago.

New Credit Card Rules Put Caps on Late Fees

A batch of new rules that went into effect on Sunday will protect consumers against unfair credit card practices.


These protections include provisions for more proportional penalty fees and the elimination of card inactivity fees. Late payment fees, for example, are now limited to $25.
